Digital Text to Support Fluency

Storyline Online

I have used this in my classroom and this is a fantastic support site. During my time as a teacher, I have met non-English speaking parents who wanted to know how to support their children to read.  Usually my two recommendation are Storyline or YouTube (read alouds). Both resources support to promote not only fluency but all areas of literacy.

Benefits
  • "Pre-reading Preparation
Using storylineonline, actors introduce the books and themselves allowing for a space where students can begin making connections before the story has begun.
  • Prosody Comparisons
Students can compare how they sound versus how another reader sounds using an iPad or other device. The student can read the text on storytelling with the audio muted, then unmute and compare.
  • Reader's Theater - Virtually Dramatic
Students who are afraid to read in front of a crowd can use digital devices to practice their reading prosody and to do it in a non-threatening setting. Also, you can create a space for students to all submit their work in a singular space and comment on each others' work" (Thoermer & Williams, 2012).
